On this day:

AD 97, To placate the Praetorians of Germany, Nerva of Rome adopts Trajan, the Spanish-born governor of lower Germany. And thus begins the union of Greece and Rome with the «barbarians» that leads to the glories of European Greco-Roman Catholic civilisation!

AD 1553, Michael Servetus, who discovered the pulmonary circulation of the blood, is burned for heresy in Switzerland. While I have no problem with burning heretics since it may save their souls and will definitely save the souls of those they might lead astray, I would point out that this was an unusual case in that whilst Servetus was condemned by the Holy Office of The Inquistion, he was burned by Swiss heretics.
