Allegiance to the Crown

Recently, on a Catholic forum I participate in, I was asked:

So Jovan, you being a Catholic please explain your undivided support for the English monarchy?

My answer:

First of all, while I 'support' the 'English' Monarchy (as I've pointed out, no such office has existed since 1707), the question here is why I support the Canadian Monarchy and have twice sworn allegiance to Her Majesty as Queen of Canada, first as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and then in the statutory form according to the Oaths of Allegiance Act before a Commissioner of Oaths. And, BTW, I may soon be taking out British citizenship, in which case I will swear allegiance to her as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Because, since 1 January 1766, with the death of James VIII and III, the Church, acting thru' the Holy See, has recognised the Houses of Hanover, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Windsor, leading up to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as the only legitimate Sovereigns of Great Britain, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and by extension as the only legitimate Sovereigns of the Commonwealth Realms, including Canada.

Concerning the Church’s position, the last Catholic King (de facto) was James VII&II. When he was overthrown by the Dutch usurper, William, the Church continued to recognise James as King de jure and, indeed, recognised his son as James VIII&III as King de jure, as I would have, being an obedient Catholic. However, when the ‘Old Pretender’, id est James VIII & III, died on 1 January 1766, the Holy See refused to recognise his son, Charles Edward, the ‘Young Pretender’, a/k/a ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’, as King, thus de facto and de jure recognising George III as King. This was despite the fact Charles Edward’s brother Henry, who was an influential Cardinal in the Roman Curia, petitioned the Holy Father to recognise Charles as King. I’ve included links to the relevant documents in this matter so that you can read for yourself the Church’s response:

Diplomatic relations were restored, under HM King George V, in 1914 with a ‘Special Mission to the Vatican’ which was renamed ‘His Majesty's Legation to the Holy See’ in 1923. The Mission was raised to full Ambassadorial status in 1982 in the Reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Pontificate of His Holiness John Paul II.

Further evidence that the Church does not oppose support for the existing Monarchy is that the Traditional Missal contains prayers for the Sovereign:

This prayer can be found on page 923 of the Roman Catholic Daily Missal from Angelus Press (probably the most common English-Latin Missal), after the Leonine Prayers . It is also found in the St. Andrew Daily Missal.

Do note though that these prayers would have been composed and mandated by the hierarchy in England rather then directly by the Holy See. Nonetheless this shows that after the restoration of Catholicism in England, at least, the Church saw no contradiction between the Faith and loyalty to the Crown.

And, for those who know their Canadian history, as I assume you do, it is important to remember that both during the American rebellion and the Patriotes insurrection the Bishops of Quebec reminded their people that they should honour their loyalty to their King and should not be tempted by the rebels.

Remembrance Day

At the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918, the guns fell silent on the Western Front ending the Great War, the 'war to end all wars'. My Uncle Roy Wisemiller (the mis-spelling the army paymaster gave him, which he kept and is engraved on his gravestone next to his brother, my father, Perry Weismiller!) was on the Western Front with the AEF, whilst my grandfather, Charles Albert Oxley, had been invalided back to Britain after serving with the Royal Field Artillery in Mesopotamia (Iraq). I'm sure they were overjoyed. Let us pray for the souls, both military and civilian, who died on both side of that great conflict.

"In Flanders Fields" by Lt Col. John Alexander MacCrae, M.D., Canadian Army, 1872-1918, died at the front of meningitis and pneumonia whilst serving in a field hospital.

Can somebody explain something to me?

Given the actions of the US and the EU in the illegal and immoral destruction of Serbian sovereignty, can someone please tell me where they got the chutzpa to denounce the Russian action in Georgia last year? They have already established the precedent of outside powers participating in the destruction or dismembering of a sovereign state in violation of international law and of the UN Charter. How can they denounce Russia for doing the exact same thing?

Abortionist Morgentaler Appointed to the Order of Canada

If you are not already aware of it, Henry Morgentaler, the man responsible for ending all laws regulating abortion in Canada, has been honoured with appointment to the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian award.

While Canadians are deeply divided over the abortion question, polls taken when his appointment was announced indicate that 92% of Canadians oppose his being honoured in this way. One priest member of the Order has already resigned and returned his Decoration in protest.

While the appointment has been made, it can be withdrawn! Many of our Bishops are calling on Catholics to contact Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada and The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada to protest this appointment.

Yemeni girl, 8, gets divorce after forced marriage

An eight-year-old Yemeni girl was granted a divorce from an arranged marriage she was forced into in just the second grade.

Nojud Mohammed Ali said she was forced to marry under an agreement reached between her unemployed father and 28-year-old former husband, Faez Ali Thameur, earlier this year, AFP reported.

"They asked me to sign the marriage contract and remain in my father's house until I was 18," the girl told AFP. "But a week after signing, my father and my mother forced me to go live with him."

Thameur told a judge that he married Nojud with her consent and her parents', and that the marriage "was consummated, but I did not beat her." He did not object to the divorce petition.
Nojud's father said he married off his daughter with her consent out of fear that she might be kidnapped, as he claimed her two older sisters had been, AFP reported.

Nojud said she has no desire to see her father and will instead live with a maternal uncle.
"I am happy that I am divorced now. I will be able to go back to school," Nojud told AFP.

Her lawyer compared the case to thousands of others in Yemen, which has no minimum age of marriage. She said advocates are pushing for laws that would make 18 the minimum age of marriage.


Hamas Cleric Predicts 'Rome Will Be Conquered by Islam'

A sermon last Friday by a prominent Muslim cleric and Hamas member of the Palestinian parliament openly declared that "the capital of the Catholics, or the Crusader capital," would soon be conquered by Islam.

The fiery sermon, delivered by Yunis al-Astal and aired on Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV, predicted that Rome would become "an advanced post for the Islamic conquests, which will spread though Europe in its entirety, and then will turn to the two Americas, even Eastern Europe."

"Allah has chosen you for Himself and for His religion," al-Astal preached, "so that you will serve as the engine pulling this nation to the phase of succession, security and consolidation of power, and even to conquests through da'wa and military conquests of the capitals of the entire world.
"Very soon, Allah willing, Rome will be conquered, just like Constantinople was, as was prophesized by our prophet Muhammad," he added.

Al-Astal last June preached how it was the duty of Palestinian women to martyr themselves by becoming homicide bombers.

"The most exalted form of jihad is fighting for the sake of Allah, which means sacrificing one's soul by fighting the enemies head-on, even if it leads to martyrdom," he said in a June 23, 2007 interview.

"When jihad becomes an individual duty, it applies to women too, because women do not differ from men when it comes to individual duties," he said, calling Jews "the brothers of apes and pigs" who should "taste the bitterness of death."

Friday's rant repeated that theme: "Today, Rome is the capital of the Catholics, or the Crusader capital, which has declared its hostility to Islam, and has planted the brothers of apes and pigs in Palestine in order to prevent the reawakening of Islam.

"I believe that our children, or our grandchildren, will inherit our jihad and our sacrifices, and, Allah willing, the commanders of the conquest will come from among them.

"Today, we instill these good tidings in their souls – and by means of the mosques and the Koran books, and the history of our Prophets, his companions, and the great leaders, we prepare them for the mission of saving humanity from the hellfire at whose brink they stand."

First, from FrontPage, is "Kosovo: Islamism's New Beachhead?", which, while discussing the stupidity of the US's recognition of the illegal and immoral act of the Kosovar jihadists, also contains multiple links to news stories about further destabilisation throughout the world as separatist movements draw the logical conclusion from Kosovo, i.e., that international law no longer protects the territorial integrity of sovereign states.
Second, from The Brussels Journal, "The West’s Fatal Mistake: We Are All Serbs Now", detailing the (well known) deep involvement of the Kosovar 'government' with organised crime. Bush and his minions were fully aware of this when they violated Serbian sovereignty in order to establish Kosovo as an 'independent state'.

The story points out that Serbia is facing a choice, Kosovo or membership in the EU. The President of Serbia pretends that both are achievable. If he really believes that, I'd like to know the colour of the sun on his planet! Of, course, the readers of this blog know my opinions on the EU, so it can be correctly assumed that I am very happy that Serbia will never be able to join the EU and that the EU's support for the illegal and immoral 'declaration of independence' by the Kosovar jihadists may very well herald the breakup of that evil body!

However, the reason I am posting it is to point out the blatant hypocrisy of the United States government. Just read the quotes below.

"The embassy is sovereign US territory. The government of Serbia has a responsibility under international law to protect diplomatic facilities, particularly embassies," Zalmay Khalilzad, US Ambassador to the UN (Yes, you read that right! The US Ambassador to the UN is an Afghani Muslim.)


Now let's change a few words. I'll highlight them for emphasis:


"Kosovo is sovereign Serbian territory. The government of The United States has a responsibility under international law to protect the territorial integrity of sovereign States, particularly under the UN Charter, member States of the UN."

The hypocrisy of the US! And it has nothing to do with party politics. Bush is simply carrying out the policies begun by his Democratic predecessor who launched a terror campaign against the Serbian people in 1999.

'Independent' Kosovo: A threat, not a country

Abraham Lincoln was fond of asking the rhetorical question: "If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Five? No, calling a tail a leg don't make it a leg."
That pretty much sums up the recent unilateral declaration of independence by Albanian Muslims in the Serbian province of Kosovo. Several countries, disgracefully led by the United States, have recognized Kosovo. Major media have hailed creation of the "world's newest country." But calling Kosovo a country doesn't make it one.
Serbia has denounced the move as the illegal creation of a "separatist entity" on its sovereign territory and has handed down criminal indictments against several of the top Albanian Muslim leaders. Now under way is a sharp global competition to see which governments will recognize Kosovo and which will not. Under heavy pressure from the U.S. State Department, most European countries will meekly comply. Some, like Cyprus with its Turkish-occupied north and Spain with its Basque separatist movement, will not.
In short, an action State Department bureaucrats touted as "settling Kosovo's status" has resulted in anything but. Outside of Europe, the picture is even fuzzier. Russia will reject Kosovo's independence, and expected to take the same line are China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil and many others. Russia will veto any effort to extend Kosovo membership in the United Nations.
Any sovereign state with restive ethnic or religious minorities would recognize Kosovo at its own peril. What Washington seeks to inflict on Serbia today could be the fate of the American southwest tomorrow. Israel, in particular, is closely pondering its next move. While loath to anger Washington, Jerusalem must consider that a Kosovo precedent could, absent any negotiated agreement, prompt proclamation of a Palestinian state, to be recognized by Arab and Muslim regimes. The same precedent could apply to heavily Muslim areas such as Galilee and the Negev within Israel's formal borders.
At a special press briefing, outgoing Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns – who is often mentioned as a possible secretary of state under a Democratic administration – hailed support for Kosovo from the Organization of the Islamic Conference and Muslim governments. Happily claiming that a "vastly majority Muslim state" has been carved out of Serbia, a European Christian country, Burns said: "We think it is a very positive step that this Muslim state, Muslim majority state, has been created today."
Burns' remarks reflect a desperate hope by the Bush administration that displays of American pro-Islamic favoritism in the Balkans and support for a Palestinian state (its domination by Hamas notwithstanding) will buy the good will of hostile devotees of the "religion of peace and tolerance." Their gratitude is manifest in the jihad terror plot to attack Fort Dix, N.J., where four of the six defendants are Albanian Muslims from the Kosovo region. The offenders' presence in the United States – three of them illegal aliens and one brought to the U.S. by the Clinton administration as a refugee, another example of "gratitude" – stems from the fact that a broadly based support network for the terrorist "Kosovo Liberation Army," KLA, has been allowed to operate with impunity in the New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania area, raising funds and collecting weapons, not to mention peddling influence with American politicians.
Meanwhile, Christian Serbs in Kosovo are bracing for the worst. "We are all expecting something difficult and horrible," said Bishop Artemije, pastor of Kosovo's Orthodox Christians. "Our message to you, all Serbs in Kosovo, is to remain in your homes and around your monasteries, regardless of what God allows or our enemies do."
The bishop's flock has good reason to fear. Far from the usual claims that NATO stopped a humanitarian catastrophe in Kosovo in 1999, the past nine years have seen a slow-motion genocide in progress against the province's Christian Serbian population under the nose of the U.N. and NATO, and at times with their facilitation. Two-thirds of the Serbian population already has been expelled and have not been able to return safely to their homes, along with similar proportions of other groups (Roma, Gorani, Croats and all the Jews). Over 150 churches and monasteries have been destroyed, with crosses and icons of Christ attracting particular vandalistic rage, a testament to Kosovo Albanians' supposed secularism and pro-Western orientation.
Hundreds of new Saudi-funded mosques fomenting the extreme Wahhabi doctrine have sprung up. Kosovo is visibly morphing from part of Europe into part of the Middle East. In contrast to Under Secretary Burns' cheerleading, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton has warned: "Kosovo will be a weak state susceptible to radical Islamist influence from outside the region, with the support from some Albanians, in other words, a potential gate for radicalism to enter Europe." If allowed to consolidate, an independent Kosovo would become a way station toward an anti-American, anti-Israel, anti-Christian "Eurabia."
Around the world, jihad terror usually goes hand-in-hand with organized crime. Kosovo is the perfect case in point. The supposed authorities of the would-be state are themselves kingpins in the Albanians Mafia, whose network extends throughout Europe and has a significant presence in New York City. Besides all the international aid dumped down the Kosovo rat hole, or carted off by corrupt officials, the only real "industry" is crime: drugs (heroin from Afghan opium), slaves (kidnapped women and children from Moldova, Ukraine and other countries brought in for local "service" – there are lot of lonely international bureaucrats in Kosovo – or shipped off into Europe), and weapons (the missile that hit the U.S. Embassy in Athens in 2006 and the explosives used in the London and Madrid train bombings came through Kosovo).
What will happen now in Kosovo? It would be up to the KLA and their supporters to decide whether to kick off a new cycle of violence by attacking Serbs who refuse to submit to their "authority." Serbia in fact has been beefing up its legitimate state institutions in areas where Serbs are concentrated, which the Albanians have threatened to shut down as – believe it or not – illegal separatist structures. We will see if the political violence unleashed by the act of recognition will be matched by physical violence on the ground. Meanwhile, Serbia will undertake undisclosed countermeasures to undermine the illegally declared KLA- and Mafia-ruled entity and force resumption of negotiations to achieve a valid settlement. Let us hope they succeed.
With a stoke of his pen, President Bush, by heeding the State Department's bad advice to recognize a supposedly independent Kosovo, has triggered the perfect international storm: shattering the principle of the territorial integrity of sovereign nations, encouraging violent separatists worldwide, provoking a needless confrontation with Russia and other countries, boosting the jihad terrorist and organized crime threat to Europe and America, and creating conditions for a human rights and religious freedom nightmare. In terms of far-reaching consequences, it may the worst blunder of his presidency. Which is saying a lot.

The Consequences of Kosovo for Southern California

America, however, should fear other consequences, too. The Kosovo Albanians claimed Kosovo for two reasons: (a) because long, very long ago, before the province was Serbian, it used to be theirs and (b) because today they have become a majority in the province. America granted them their wish and forced Serbia out.

What if tomorrow Hispanics in California (or Texas) push for the independence of Southern California (or Southern Texas), arguing (a) that a long time ago, before these provinces became Anglo-American, they were Mexican and (b) that Hispanics have now become a majority there? Applying the Kosovo logic of Bill Clinton and George Bush, Washington should then be forced out of Southern California by an international army of European, Russian and Chinese troops who would establish an independent “nation” there. All this would be done in violation of the international rule that international borders can only be changed with the agreement of all parties. This is how Washington is treating Serbia today. If one day Washington were to be treated in a similar fashion it would only be getting its due.

I am not really sure, but the erosion of the U.N. system and international law is something that is part of every Serbian and Russian government spokesman on this issue. And there is certainly some plausibility to this argument, as I understand it. U.N. member states are supposed to recognize the territorial sovereignty of other member states. (See, e.g., UN Charter, Art. 2 ("All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations. ")

But Kosovo's nationhood is, quite frankly, a creation of NATO's 1999 military intervention (an intervention that was itself arguably illegal under international law). So the NATO states have "illegally" severed Kosovo from Serbia via an "illegal" military action.

Let's be honest. Neither the Serbs nor the Russians are particularly sympathetic parties here. But this does not completely explain the deafening silence from Western public international law professors on this issue. Or the angry protests from international-law-abiding progressives in the Western world, who raised the "illegality" argument constantly against the Iraq and Afghanistan interventions.

Where is the outrage, or at least the fair-minded analysis? It doesn't have anything to do with the policy preferences of Western international law academics and Western progressives, does it?

Albanians in Kosovo need to remember that you cannot build a peaceful and happy life at the expense of others, a spokesman for the Moscow Patriarchate said. “Certainly, the Kosovar Albanians, like any other people, can wish for a life of peace and dignity. But, you cannot build such a life at the expense of others”, said Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy chief of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, in comments on Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence. This event is a breach of international law, “one of the most crucial principles of which is the inviolability of the territorial integrity of states”, he said. “This principle in the international legal system is not inferior to the idea of human rights, and an attempt to otherwise interpret international law is biased”, Fr Vsevolod said. That the global community has failed to prevent this breach by acceding to force and political pressure “is a most serious blow to the very foundation of the legal system of international relations”, he said.
Most non-Albanians have left Kosovo, and hundreds of churches, which are a part of the cultural heritage of the entire world, have been destroyed and vandalised, and “this was accompanied by outrageous nationalist propaganda”, Fr Vsevolod said. Aleksei II, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, spoke of these instances on many occasions in public speeches and during meetings with high officials from various countries, he said. God willing, the remaining Serbs and other non-Albanians will not have to leave their homes and their spiritual and cultural legacy will not disappear completely, Fr Vsevolod said. “I would like to believe that the Serbian Orthodox Church, whose ancient spiritual centre is in this province, will continue to lead a normal life in Kosovo, developing its mission and service”. However, “previous events leave little hope for this”, he added.
Nevertheless, all countries of the world today must do everything they can to make sure that people of various ethnicities can live a free and peaceful life in Kosovo and have an opportunity to fulfil their hopes and expectations and to choose for themselves a lifestyle both on a governmental level and on an ethnic community level. “When one party to a conflict feels injustice and suffers, the conflict cannot be deemed resolved. This should be clear to all those who make decisions in Kosovo itself and in those countries which are taking responsibility for the people who live there”.
In a related move, the Moscow Patriarchate has urged Kosovar Albanians to understand the disastrous consequences that shall flow from their unilateral declaration of independence. “We would like the Albanian side, which did this, to understand that this path is disastrous, and to seek reconciliation with the Serbians”, Priest Georgy Ryabykh, a representative of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, told Interfax-Religion. Any decision concerning several parties cannot be made unilaterally, as it could lead to an escalation of the conflict, he said. “That is why if the crisis in Kosovo escalates, the responsibility will lie with the Albanian side, because they dared to take this unilateral step”, Fr Georgi said. Patriarch Aleksei II of Moscow and all Russia has many times stated that the issue of the status of Kosovo should not be solved disregarding the opinion of the Serbian people.

Serbia must declare that Kosovo is an occupied territory and buy arms from Russia to get it back, said today the Serbian Orthodox Church Bishop Artemije in charge of the Raska-Prizren Eparchy, where Kosovo is included, for Serbian daily Glas Javnosti.


“Serbia must buy armaments from Russia and other countries, and ask Russia to send volunteers and build a military presence in Serbia.”


“Kosovo was and will always be Serbian,” stated Bishop Artemije, adding that independence declaration will be “a temporary state of occupation.”


He called the Serb Military Chief of Staff Zdravko Ponos that Kosovo will not be defended militarily “an embarrassment.”

Kosovo


I will not even bother posting links to the news articles, because I assume that anyone reading this blog has already seen them. They are all over the web, with obscene pictures of the jihadists celebrating their (temporary, I assure you!) victory. The fascinating thing is that the swine are celebrating the establishment of their "State" by waving the flag of a foreign country! This shows that their actual aim has nothing to do with "independence". They are attempting to create a "Greater Albania" as a jihadist outpost in Europe.

I am morbidly fascinated by the support for this illegal and immoral act from the US, its NATO allies and the EU. It seems that when the UN backs their "war on terror" in Afghanistan, it is "She who must be obeyed", but when they want to support jihadist terrorism, the UN is simply to be ignored! And of course, it is important to remember that the Kosovar jihadists would be in no position to declare "independence" if it were not for the terror campaign against the Serb people carried out by Bill Clinton and his minions in NATO in 1999.

This putative declaration of "independence" violates international law, but so did the US/NATO actions in 1999 as does the continued illegal occupation of sovereign Serbian territory by NATO troops. It also violates the UN Charter which guarantees the territorial integrity of member States and it violates, specifically, Security Council Resolution 1244 of 10 June 1999.


As I have pointed out many times before, on this blog, in fora in which I participate and in person to whomever would listen, Kosovo is the heartland of Serbia. It was in Kosovo that the Serbian Nation was founded, in Kosovo that the Serbian Church took root and it was in Kosovo that the flower of Serbian chivalry was slaughtered, dying in defence of the West against the Turkish hordes. Now as the Munich of Europe approaches and the dictators of the EU prepare to throw open the gates of Europe to the jihad, the Kosovars see their chance to tear the heart out of Serbia and they are being aided, abetted, helped and protected by two faced hypocrites in Washington and other Western capitals who claim to be fighting terror

This blatant power grab by the jihadists in Europe must not be allowed to stand! I ask my readers to immediately protest to their governments by all legitimate and legal means, asking that Kosovar "independence" not be recognised, that the occupying troops be withdrawn from Serbian territory and that Serbia be allowed to fulfill its obligations under SC Res. 1244.

21 September AD 1792

A very sad anniversary. It was on this day in AD 1792 that the Revolution "abolished" the Monarchy of France, already having destroyed the Traditional, Catholic Monarchy of France and Navarre on 1 October AD 1791 by replacing it with the "Kingdom of the French" (the title adopted by the Masonic Orleanist usurper in 1830). This Act led directly to the martyrdom of His Most Christian Majesty in exactly four months on 21 January 1793.

While I am pleased that the Knights have taken this action, I still have no plans to rejoin them. I was a member for 20 years but I finally left after repeatedly trying to get a reasonable explanation from Supreme Headquarters as to why men like Ted Kennedy, who oppose the Magisterium on almost every point, continued to be allowed membership in the Order. When the Knights expel Kennedy and other "Catholic" politicians of his ilk, I will be more than happy to rejoin.

A Dark Day in History

Today is the anniversary of the beginning of the Berlin Wall, the day on which John F. Kennedy, Charles de Gaulle and Harold Macmillan sold out the people of East Germany to the Red slavemasters. The construction of the wall was a blatant violation of the Four Power Pact governing Berlin and Berliners on both sides of the border stood watching the construction, waiting for the Western tanks to roll and put a stop to it. The tanks did not roll and for 28 years, 2 months and 26 days the wall stood as a reminder of the shame of the West.

On a personal note, I remember well when it went up and I fully expected it to be standing when I died. On the evening of 9 November 1989 I was at work as a PBX operator when my wife called to tell me that the wall was coming down. She held the telephone up to the TV so that I could hear the reports. I began to cry and my co-workers, walking by my desk, asked what was wrong. I could only reply, through my tears, "The Berlin Wall is coming down!" Soon, I was surrounded by people as I relayed what I was hearing. It is one of those few dates that I will always remember where I was and what I was doing.

My Apologies

To all my gentle readers (if I have any left!) I apologise for my disappearance from the 'net. When I last posted in January, I was (a) in the process of preparing to emigrate and (b) suffering a severe case of "blogger burnout!" I had been posting daily since September, 2005, with the exception of unwilling hiati when my computer crashed. The combination of the "burnout" and the stress of the coming move ganged up on me and I "went missing".

Well, I'm back, blogging from Edmonton, Alberta. I can't guarantee that I will get back to the level of commitment I had before, but I will try to blog on a regular basis. Now that my US Passport has arrived, I have the joy of the Canadian bureaucracy to look forward to as I begin the long journey to citizenship, starting with permanent residency and permission to work.

As a monarchist, it was moving that, just days after my arrival, I was present at the annual dinner of the Monday night cribbage club at the Royal Canadian Legion, Kingsway Branch, #175. We drank the Loyal Toast to HM Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada and sang the Royal Anthem (God save the Queen) as well as O, Canada. While my liege loyalty to His Most Christian Majesty, Louis XX remains unaffected, I'm glad to be living in a monarchy and I look forward to taking the Oath to Her Majesty upon becoming a citizen.

In the name of the Very holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

To-day, the 25th day of December, 1792, I, Louis XVI King of France, being for more than four months imprisoned with my family in the tower of the Temple at Paris, by those who were my subjects, and deprived of all communication whatsoever, even with my family, since the eleventh instant; moreover, involved in a trial the end of which it is impossible to foresee, on account of the passions of men, and for which one can find neither pretext nor means in any existing law, and having no other witnesses, for my thoughts than God to whom I can address myself,

I hereby declare, in His presence, my last wishes and feelings.

I leave my soul to God, my creator; I pray Him to receive it in His mercy, not to judge it according to its merits but according to those of Our Lord Jesus Christ who has offered Himself as a sacrifice to God His Father for us other men, no matter how hardened, and for me first.

I die in communion with our Holy Mother, the Catholic, Apostolic, Roman Church, which holds authority by an uninterrupted succession, from St. Peter, to whom Jesus Christ entrusted it; I believe firmly and I confess all that is contained in the creed and the commandments of God and the Church, the sacraments and the mysteries, those which the Catholic Church teaches and has always taught. I pray God to receive my firm resolution, if He grants me life, to have the ministrations of a Catholic priest, as soon as I can, in order to confess my sins and to receive the sacrament of penance.

I beg all those whom I might have offended inadvertently (for I do not recall having knowingly offended any one), or those whom I may have given bad examples or scandals, to pardon the evil which they believe I could have done them.

I beseech those who have the kindness to join their prayers to mine, to obtain pardon from God for my sins.

I pardon with all my heart those who made themselves my enemies, without my have given them any cause, and I pray God to pardon them, as well as those who, through false or misunderstood zeal, did me much harm.

I commend to God my wife and my children, my sister, my aunts, my brothers, and all those who are attached to me by ties of blood or by whatever other means. I pray God particularly to cast eyes of compassion upon my wife, my children, and my sister, who suffered with me for so long a time, to sustain them with His mercy if they shall lose me, and as long as they remain in his mortal world.

I commend my children to my wife; I have never doubted her maternal tenderness for them. I enjoin her above all to make them good Christians and honest individuals; to make them view the grandeurs of this world (if they are condemned to experience them) as very dangerous and transient goods, and turn their attention towards the one solid and enduring glory, eternity. I beseech my sister to kindly continue her tenderness for my children and to take the place of a mother, should they have the misfortune of losing theirs.

I beg my wife to forgive all the pain which she suffered for me, and the sorrows which I may have caused her in the course of our union; and she may feel sure that I hold nothing against her, if she has anything with which to reproach herself.

I most warmly enjoin my children that, after what they owe to God, which should come first, they should remain forever united among themselves, submissive and obedient to their mother, and grateful for all the care and trouble which she has taken with them, as well as in memory of me. I beg them to regard my sister as their second mother.

I exhort my son, should he have the misfortune of becoming king, to remember he owes himself wholly to the happiness of his fellow citizens; that he should forget all hates and all grudges, particularly those connected with the misfortunes and sorrows which I am experiencing; that he can make the people happy only by ruling according to laws: but at the same time to remember that a king cannot make himself respected and do the good that is in his heart unless he has the necessary authority, and that otherwise, being tangled up in his activities and not inspiring respect, he is more harmful than useful.

I exhort my son to care for all the persons who are attached to me, as much as his circumstances will allow, to remember that it is a sacred debt which I have contracted towards the children and relatives of those who have perished for me and also those who are wretched for my sake. I know that there are many persons, among those who were near me, who did not conduct themselves towards me as they should have and who have even shown ingratitude, but I pardon them (often in moments of trouble and turmoil one is not master of oneself), and I beg my son that, if he finds an occasion, he should think only of their misfortunes.

I should have wanted here to show my gratitude to those who have given me a true and disinterested affection; if, on the one hand, I was keenly hurt by the ingratitude and disloyalty of those to whom I have always, shown kindness, as well as to their relatives and friends, on the other hand I have had the consolation of seeing the affection and voluntary interest which many persons have shown me. I beg them to receive my thanks.

In the situation in which matters still are, I fear to compromise them if I should speak more explicitly, but I especially enjoin my son to seek occasion to recognize them.

I should, nevertheless, consider it a calumny on the nation if I did not openly recommend to my son MM. De Chamilly and Hue, whose genuine attachment for me led them to imprison themselves with me in this sad abode. I also recommend Clery, for whose attentiveness I have nothing but praise ever since he has been with me. Since it is he who has remained with me until the end, I beg the gentlemen of the commune to hand over to him my clothes, my books, my watch, my purse, and all other small effects which have been deposited with the council of the commune.

I pardon again very readily those who guard me, the ill treatment and the vexations which they thought it necessary to impose upon me. I found a few sensitive and compassionate souls among them - may they in their hearts enjoy the tranquillity which their way of thinking gives them.

I beg MM. De Malesherbes, Tronchet and De Seze to receive all my thanks and the expressions of my feelings for all the cares and troubles they took for me.

I finish by declaring before God, and ready to appear before Him, that I do not reproach myself with any of the crimes with which I am charged.
