  • On this day:

AD 269, Diocletian is proclaimed emperor at Numeria in Asia Minor by his soldiers. He had been the commander of the Prætorian Guard. He introduced the last great persecution of the Church.

AD 1890, His Holiness Pope Leo XIII issues His Encyclical Catholicae Ecclesiae, (On Slavery in the Missions).

AD 1910, Revolution broke out in Mexico, led by Francisco I. Madero, leading to the persecution of Holy Church under the Revolutionary government in the '20s.

AD 1936, José Antonio Primo de Rivera, Marqués de Estella, Founder of the Spanish Falange, died this day. R+I+P.

AD 1945, Nuremberg Trials begin. While I agree that the men convicted at Nuremburg were guilty of heinous crimes and deserved the supreme penalty, they should have been held accountable under pre-Nazi German law. We set a dangerous precedent by creating ex post facto law (unconstitutional in the US!) which will come back to haunt us someday.

AD 1975, Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teódulo Franco y Bahamonde Salgado Pardo de Andrade, Generalissimo, Caudillo de España por la gracia Dios, Defender of the West, died this day.R+I+P.
