Bishop Claims Lewes’ Bonfire Is Inoffensive
With all due respect to His Excellency of Arundel and Brighton, the existence of «Bonfire Night» or Guy Fawkes Day is offensive to any true Catholic. Some of us have not forgotten the violent anti-Catholicism that was incorporated into the Liturgy of the Church of England because of this «holiday» until well into the reign of HM Queen Victoria. In fact, could the fact that «The first Bonfire Societies in Lewes were set up in 1853» have anything to do with the fact that the C of E abolished the «Feast» of Guy Fawkes Day aroud the same time?
