Today is the Feast of the Commemoration of the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ.
From the East:
The Martyrology:
On this day:
AD 533, Saint Rémy of Rheims, who baptised Clovis, King of the Franks and 3 000 Franks into orthodox Catholicism at Christmas, AD 496, died. His Feast is kept on 1 Octobre, the anniversary of his Translation. By his baptism of Clovis he assured the triumph of Catholicism in the West and laid the foundations of France as the «Eldest Daughter of the Church». Saint Rémy, pray for France, for her victory over her Islamic enemies and that she may return to the Covenant made between you and Clovis.
AD 858, Æþelvvulf (Ethelwulf), King of the West Saxons, dies. (R+I+P)
AD 888, Charles III the Fat, King of Franconia, Roman emperor, dies. (R+I+P)
AD 888, Duke Eudes chosen king of the West Franks. The son of Robert le Fort, he is an uncle many, many times removed of STCM Louis XX, King of France and Navarre.
AD 1559, Elizabeth I crowned queen of England in Westminster Abbey. Anointed and crowned according to the Rites of the Holy Roman Church, she swore to uphold that Faith. But she was an amoral adventuress determined to hold onto power. Despite her persoanal Catholic leanings, she unleashed the protestant revolt anew upon the poor people of England. All ye English Martyrs, pray for the conversion of England, that she may once again be «Our Lady's Dowry!»
AD 1929, Humanist Society established, Hollywood CA. And we thought the atheist takeover of Hollywood was recent!
AD 1959, De Gaulle grants amnesty to 130 to Algerian death row convicts. Of course, to de Gaulle murdering Frenchmen wasn't much of a crime. He had lots of experience himself!
AD 1959, King Boudouin promises Belgian Congo independence. His Majesty's failure of nerve led to a bloodbath which is still going on.
