THIS IS NOT A PARODY!!!

"It has taken the shortage of priestly and religious vocations to awaken in us an appreciation of a broadly based shared ministry and a realization that it is in the nature of the Church as the Body of Christ to be endowed with many gifts, ministries and offices. What some refer to as a "vocations crisis" is, rather, one of the many fruits of the Second Vatican Council, a sign of God’s deep love for the Church, (emphasis added) and an invitation to a more creative and effective ordering of gifts and energy in the Body of Christ. This is a time of great challenge and opportunity in the Church, not least of all because the gifts of the lay faithful have been flourishing in unprecedented numbers and in unforeseen ways."

From a Pastoral Letter from "Cardinal Roger Mahony and the Priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Holy Thursday, April 20, 2000" (Since when does an Ordinary issue a Pastoral Letter in union with the priests of his (Arch)diocese?)

The entire document can be read at the website of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

A tip of the hat to Fumare!

Yes, Hilary, I'm aware that it's very old news. I am also aware that many people (including myself until yesterday when I saw it on Fumare) were not aware of it, so I posted it. If I'm still blogging in four years, I might post it yet again on its 10th anniversary!

Actually, there isn't a vocational crisis. In those dioceses that are orthodox, vocations are actually up. Amy Welborn's blog has covered vocations both good and bad.
With respect to Vatican II, it was implemented in very bad faith. I'm saddened that it's taken 40 years to correct what should've been done in the first place.
I myself have no objections to the Tridentine and would like to see the indult. Let people choose the mass that best suits their spiritual needs Whether it's ad orientem or versus populam is better is theological pettifoggery. I want mass to be done correctly and reverently whether Novus Ordo or Tridentine

Xavier,

I'm in total agreement. I prefer the Tridentine Mass, but my spiritual director and a very dear friend are both NO priests who celebrate versus populam, but reverently and with great devotion. I also agree on the "vocations crisis"> Look at the Diocese of Lincoln! No crisis there, but His Exceelency is Catholic!

Curmudgeon,

If you're right, his webmaster can't type. That quote was a cut and paste from the Archdiocesan website!
