AD 1096, Seljuk Turks at Chivitot slaughter thousands of German crusaders. As they have continued to do whenever they've had the chance through history!

1529, The Pope names Henry VIII of England Defender of the Faith after defending the seven sacraments against Luther. (In Henry's defence, he lived and died an orthodox Catholic, albeit a schismatic one. The protestant revolt in England began under his son, Edward VI.) The heretic, Elizabeth II, still claims the title, but we must be careful not to enquire which faith she defends!

AD 1790, The Tricolour is chosen as the official flag of France. And we still work for the Restoration of the Lilies!
