On this day:
AD 439, Carthage, the leading Roman city in North Africa, falls to Genseric and the Vandals. Carthage was a Christian city. The Vandal conquest of North Africa destroyed the Roman infrastructure, laying the groundwork for the success of the jihad two centuries later.
AD 1531, Bavaria, despite being a Catholic region, joins the League of Schmalkalden, a Protestant group which opposes Charles V, their crowned and anointed Emperor (the last to be crowned by thePope. All succeeding Emperors were techically «emperors elect» as was provided in the oratio in the votive Mass For the Emperor in the Traditional Roman Missal). This action prevented Charles from reaching his goal of the reconquest of all protestant areas and the banning of protestantism in the Empire.
AD 1648, The signing of the Treaty of Westphalia ends the German Thirty Years' War. And with the end of the war, Charles dream is finally dead. The religion of the prince becomes the religion of his subjects regardless of their wishes and protestantism becomes entrenched in the Imperial territories.
