AD 439, Carthage, the leading Roman city in North Africa, falls to Genseric and the Vandals. Carthage was a Christian city. The Vandal conquest of North Africa destroyed the Roman infrastructure, laying the groundwork for the success of the jihad two centuries later.

AD 1531, Bavaria, despite being a Catholic region, joins the League of Schmalkalden, a Protestant group which opposes Charles V, their crowned and anointed Emperor (the last to be crowned by thePope.
