Code of Chivaltry

This might be of interest to my readers:

While there was no single code that served as a definition of how a knight should act, there were several lists written down during the Middle Ages. One example code can be found in the book Chivalry by 19th century French historian Leon Gautier.

Note especially the Sixth point!

I. Thou shalt believe all that the Church teaches, and shalt observe all it's directions.

II. Thou shalt defend Holy Mother the Church.

III. Thou shalt defend all weaknesses, and constitute thyself the defender of them.

IV. Thou shalt love the country of thy birth.

V. Thou shalt not recoil from thine enemy.

VI. Thou shalt make war against the infidel without cessation, and without mercy.

VII. Thou shalt preform scrupulously thy feudal duties, if they not be contrary to the laws of God.

VIII. Thou shalt never lie and shalt remain faithful to thy pledged word.

IX. Thou shalt be generous and give largesse to everyone.

X. Thou shalt always and everywhere be the champion of good and right against injustice and evil.

Update to "Prayer Request"

I have found out that, at least for the time being, the best case scenario is coming to pass, i.e. only an $8K/ year paycut! Please continue to join me in prayer that I may find a suitable position at approximately what I've been making. When I do so, I'll post on which company it is that treats loyal employees like disposable napkins!

Spiritual Bouquet for the Holy Father

The New Crusade endorses this call for a Crusade of Rosaries and agrees with W. that "It seems to me that one need not assist at Masses offered by Society priests in order to take part in this very worthy effort." For the record, I have never attended Mass in an SSPX Chapel. I am an indulter and a proud member of Saint Philippine Duchesne Latin Mass Community in Kansas City, KS under the pastoral care of Priests of the FSSP.

On 16 July, Bishop Fellay has released a Letter to the faithful along with the declaration of the general Chapter regarding the situation with Rome. Of special note in Bp. Fellay's letter is his desire to present Pope Benedict XVI with a spiritual boquet of one million Rosaries at the end of October. He and the general chapter of the S.S.P.X are therefore calling for a prayer crusade and ask the faithful to start praying their Rosaries now for these three intentions:

1. To obtain from Heaven for Pope Benedict XVI the strength required to completely free up the Mass of all time, called the Tridentine Mass.

2. For the return of the Social Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

3. For the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

It seems to me that one need not assist at Masses offered by Society priests in order to take part in this very worthy effort. I therefore encourage our readers to start "bud[ding] forth the spiritual roses for [this] bouquet" -- for the benefit of those readers that do not attend Society chapels, I will post the directions for putting together this treasure when I hear them.

    This is sickmaking! But, read the quotes from the judge who approved this abomination. This is democracy at work! When I was in high school, more years ago than I care to mention (oh that's right. I post my age in my sidebar! Drat!) I wrote a paper on the evils of democracy. I was not yet a Catholic, let alone an EvilTrad, just a reasonably intelligent protestant American. Democracy is, of its essence, evil. It panders to the lowest common denominator and it opens the way to every vice and perversion because it would be "undemocratic" to prevent perverts from attempting to spread their vice. I argued that, in a democratic state, the people could "legalise" murder, little realising that in the '70's this would be done by one of the most anti-democratic bodies on the face of the earth, the Supreme Court of the United States and without knowing that one of its earlier members, Associate Justice, the "Honorable" (for what?) Oliver Wendell Holmes had stated that the law against murder was simply a municipal ordinance which could be repealed by the will of the people.

    And in retrospect, I am much surprised that an honest teacher gave me an "A" on the paper, commenting that I was obviously thinking!

    Today I found out that due to a corporate buy out and resultant "restructuring" I will be taking a $8K-$15K per year paycut. I ask the prayers of all my readers for this situation, that I may soon find a job paying approximately what I have been making.

    NEA Agenda is Frightening to Parents

    An eye opening article by Phyllis Schlafly. Remember, as I have blogged before, if your children attend virtually any public school in the US (and for that matter, many "Catholic" schools), they are being taught by members of this vile, viciously anti-life, anti-Christian union! Years ago there was an even further left alternative, the Progressive Education Association, a communist front-group. The PEA disbanded itself after announcing that, since the NEA had adopted all its positions, there was no longer any need for it!

    Dennis Moore, MC, Constitutional Scholar?

    I recently emailed Dennis Moore, MC asking for his support of HR 2389, the "Pledge Protection Act", which protects the Pledge of Allegiance from attempts by federal courts to declare it unconstitutional because of the phrase "under God", introduced into the US House of Representatives by Todd Akin, MC for the Second District of Missouri. His answer was a long explanation of why, despite his self-proclaimed patriotism, he had voted against a preceding, similar resolution and opposed HR 2389.

    Below is the email I have sent him in response:

    Dear Mr Moore:

    I read with interest you letter of July 19, 2006 in response to my email requesting you to support H.R. 2389, introduced by Representative Akin.

    Especially interesting was your statement that you have "(D)eep concerns about current efforts to deny the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, the ability to review the constitutionality of our federal laws. I believe preserving our three-branch system of government is in our nation's best interest."

    Prompted by this, I reread Article III of the Constitution of the United States. Indeed, I reread it several times, searching in vain for any reference to an "ability to review the constitutionality of our federal laws". All I could find was a statement in Section 2 that "In all the other Cases before mentioned, the supreme Court shall have appellate Jurisdiction, both as to Law and Fact, with such Exceptions, and under such Regulations as the Congress shall make." In other words, while the ability you cite is never mentioned, Congress is definitely granted the power to remove matters from the purview of the Supreme Court.

    Of course, if the numerous American history courses I took in grade school, high school and college, all in public institutions of the State of Kansas, were not completely off base, there was no such "ability to review" contemplated by the Founding Fathers. Instead, it is a power arrogated to itself by the Supreme Court in the case of Marbury vs. Madison, in an opinion written by Chief Justice John Marshall and concurred in by Associate Justices William Paterson, Samuel Chase and Bushrod Washington (Associate Justices William Cushing and Alfred Moore took no part in the case).

    So, at the last, I am faced with a democratically elected representative of the people in a democratic country telling me that he supports a power not envisioned by the Founders granting nine unelected persons the power to determine what the Law is. Wow!

    I've just done a search of The New Crusade and it doesn't seem that I've ever mentioned "Pragmaticus Mercurius" or "Prag". It was (and maybe still is) an High Tory ginger group within the Conservative Party of the UK. It at least still publishes some things, including a newsletter. I was a member in its early days and, if it still exists as a membership group, would be interested in rejoining. It is monarchist, Christian and pro-life and wishes to see the restoration of the Stuart Constitution under the House of Windsor, which I suppose makes it semi-Jacobite.

    Somehow, I Missed This!

    No, friend who shall remain nameless, it's not old news. It was a tagging that I somehow missed. Frere Ignatius at Vive Christus Rex! tagged me with a meme called "The Ten Books". Essentially, it is this: If we are stuck on a desert island, and we're already given a Douay-Rheims (pre-1942) Bible, what other ten books would we bring along? His choices were good, but not what I would have chosen. Here's his list: This doesn't savor of as much hypocrisy as you might think, so, better late than never, I'm responding (and by the way, Crusty, Count Tradula, Darth Litigous and Darth Liturgicus!, you're all tagged!).

    I. I have my Bible, but I need a Missal so I can pray the Mass, even if I can't assist in body. Fr Lasance's Roman Missal should do.

    II. The Breviarum Roman, Latin/English, I'm afraid, since my Latin isn't up to understanding the Lectiones.

    III. A decent Catechism, so I don't forget my Faith and can convert any savage islanders who happen to canoe across the straits. The Baltimore Number Four in this case, tho' I'd settle for a lower number or the Penny in a pinch.

    IV. A general prayerbook. This would have to be Fr Lasance's Prayerbook for Religious. Unfortunately, it's no longer in print and I've lost my copy, but this is a meme, right? Written primarily for female Religious, it is an absolute treasury of prayers, schemes of meditation, novenas, and other helps to the interior life.

    V. Divine Intimacy, by Father Gabriel of St Mary Magdalene, O.Carm., to guide my daily meditation. In the original edition, of course, keyed to the Traditional Calendar, not the post V II "revision".

    (At this point, is anyone realising that the eremitical life has a certain appeal?)

    VI. Having taken care of the purely spiritual, I would want the Lord of the Rings trilogy (bound as Tolkien intended, in one volume!). I was in love with it long before a) I was a Trad, or b) realised Tolkien was a Catholic. (Sorry, Frere Ignatius, I could never get into The Silmarillion!)

    VII. Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson's Lord of the World. I should do a post about the first time I read it! A cracking good tale combined with fruit for much serious meditation!

    IX. The History of the Church, by Msgr Philip Hughes. I'm counting this as one volume, tho' I've never seen it bound so. I've reread volumes of it three and four times!

    X. And last, but not least, under the same rubric, counting a multi-volume work as one, The History of Philosophy, by Fr Frederick Copleston, S.J. Maybe, given the solitude of a desert island, I can finally finish this and understand it.

    The Perfect Prayerbook?

    I've spent my entire Catholic life searching for the perfect prayerbook. You know the one I mean, the one to supplement your Bible, Missal and Breviary or Little Office, the one that contains all your favourite prayers and devotions. Does it exist? I doubt it. However, if it did exist, at least mine would contain several prayers from the Jesus, Mary, Joseph Novena Manual, by Father Stedman. The one I have is "The New Revised" edition. Years ago, I had the "unrevised" edition, published prior to V II. The difference between the two? Indulgences are no longer stated in their pre-Conciliar "time format". That's it! The prayers are the same. Over the next few days, I'm going to post my favourite prayers from the Manual. If you're not familiar with them, I hope you'll print them out and use them occasionally.

    If you're interested in obtaining your own copy and don't have a good Catholic bookstore handy, write to the Confraternity of the Precious Blood, 5300 Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn, NY 11219, for a price list. They also publish Traditional books of meditations, etc. including the book of Psalms ordered for reading weekly according to the schema of the Traditional Breviarum Romanum. Good stuff!

    As I posted a few days ago, I had intended to re-read Fr Cahill's Framework... straight through and comment on it as I read. I have changed that intention because I have been accused of being a leftist, giving aid to communists and socialists, for my espousal of Catholic Social Doctrine as taught by Frs Cahill and Fahey, in obedience to the Magisterium. This accusation, which comes from participants on a Yahoo! group which shall remain nameless, has convinced me to start my re-reading and commenting with Fr Cahill's denunciation of capitalism. I hope my readers will bear with me. I plan on simulposting to the group and here.

    Pope hopes to reclaim lost territory

    Our Holy Father is to visit Spain. Spain is probably the finest example in the world of the effect of liberal, jacobin democracy on the remains of Christendom. When Gral. Franco died, Spain was thriving and Catholic. When the perjuror, Juan-Carlos took the throne, he swallowed the left-wing, red lie of "democracy" hook line and sinker and today Spain is reaping the whirlwind. Notice the quote from the viciously anti-Catholic Zapatero, "“I respect the opinions of the Catholic Church, but I insist that it is Parliament that legislates in the name of the citizens in a democratic society.” No mention of God or the Rights of His Church, required by Catholic Doctrine for a government to be considered just. Catholics of Spain!, withdraw your allegiance. Your King is a perjured usurper (his father was still alive when he accepted the Throne), your government is a conventicle of anti-Catholic Reds!     What I'm Reading--Fr Cahill's The Framework of a Christian State

    Since I bought myself this book in honour of my 59th birthday, I thought I might blog a little on it as I read it. It's a re-read, technically, but it's been almost 20 years, so I've forgotten a lot.

    First of all, Fr Cahill was an Irish Jesuit who was Professor of Social Science in Milltown Park, Dublin. Whether Milltown Park was a high school, college or seminary I do not know, but if I find out, I'll let you know. I often think of him as a forgotten Fr Fahey, since he wrote in the same vein on the same subjects, but is much less known today. The preface is dated Feast of Christ the King, 1931 and it received the imprimi potest 23 May 1932.

    He writes in the preface, "The book is intended primarily for students of Social Science who accept the Church's teaching." He wrote at a time when the Church was not yet afraid to speak the Truth, so in the first section he discusses the evils of protestantism, liberalism, individualistic capitalism, socialism and communism (with a discussion of the Jewish domination of the Revolutionary movement). In the second section, he deals with the Church's actual teachings on such matters as the individual, the family, husband and wife, and the state.

    As I get into, I plan to blog sections with my own comments. I hope my readers will enjoy it.

    Good news out of the Vatican. The silly dhimmi attitude of the previous reign seems to be changing for the better. We can hope that this is the beginning of a trend!

Tonight, I'm going to a nice Italian restaurant with friends to eat a free Chicken Spedini (it's my birthday! The rest have to pay!) with a nice bottle of wine and then home to blogging and reading my new book. Tomorrow back to the retail grind! (Genesis 3:17)

    The Fourth of July

    Today is the 230th anniversary of the adoption of T. Jefferson's "Declaration of Independence". It's not really "Independence Day" which was two days ago, on the anniversary of the passage of the "Lee Resolution";

    Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

    That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances.

    That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation.


    Indeed, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that, "The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward for evermore."

    How wrong he was! The day of the adoption of Jefferson's treasonous and violently anti-Catholic "Declaration" passed into history with the 2nd of July forgotten.

    So what did I do today? As a monarchist, it's not exactly a day to celebrate. It's about on par with Bastille Day and 21 January, the anniversary of the martyrdom of His Most Christian Majesty, Louis XVI, King of France and Navarre.

    So I just ignored it. I was off work (not because of the holiday! I'm in retail.) and I have spent the day so far as I would any other. I've read, worked online and relaxed. I will, however, offer my evening prayers in reparation for the sins of the Freemasonic "Founders".

    Professor Maciej Marian Giertych has spoken out in debate in praise of Gral. Franco, Salazar and de Valera! My God, dont't these Polish Catholics know that all these men were evil Fascists? Of course, they weren't, but it takes a brave man in public life to mention that fact, let alone praise them. Prof. Giertych is more proof of my personal hope that countries like Poland, Malta and Lithuania may yet save the remnants of Christendom in Europe.

    I've just spent the last couple of hours chatting with a fellow up in Alberta, Canada, Alan Goudman. He's a monarchist who has an absolutely wonderful website at Geocities. I'm putting a link to his front page in my blog roll under the title "Alan's a Royalist!", but in this post I'm going to tell you a little bit about what he's got!

    First of all, be sure to check out his, very professionally done, on-line magazine Rose and Crown! It's only the first issue, but it has an article by Charles Coulombe!

    He has an article on Tony Blair's attempts to destroy the British Monarchy at The Issue of UK Constitutional Reform and suggestions for amending the Irish Constitution (along with thoughts on "The Case for an Irish Monarchy") at The Case for an Irish Monarchy.

    He has two pages of great interest to French Legitimists: First, at A Bourbon Reply to the French Revolution, he has some thoughts on the Restoration, along with an English copy of the Constitutional Charter, granted by STCM Louis XVIII, King of France and Navarre, on 4 June 1814. Then, at Vive La Roi! A Reactionary Cure for the French Disease, he has his own draft of a Restoration Constitution based on the previous, with some of Napoleon's better reforms incorporated. We discussed collaborating on a revision, incorporating corporatism as taught by H.H. Pope Leo XIII, so keep an eye out!

    He also discusses the Brazilian Empire and has articles focussing on the Vatican, Andorra and Canada as well as a couple on the mess the Anglicans have gotten themselves into. This site is worth an in depth read! I highly recommend it to all my readers!

    150th ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIPPE PÉTAIN--MARSHAL OF FRANCE--LEGITIMATE HEAD OF STATE

    Le Marechal's 150th birthday was on 24 April. This is an article from the CRC Newsletter, edited by l'Abbe Georges de Nantes. I would point out that le Marechal was by no stretch of the imagination a good Catholic. He only married his mistress of many years when he was appointed Ambassador to Gral. Franco's government, in order to avoid embarrassing the devout Franco, but he was a brave and valiant soldier, an example par excellence of all that is great in France and a courageous fighter for all that the Church held dear before the debacle of Vatican II. Let us pray for his soul and for the return of his remains to lie amongst his beloved poilus at Verdun. Let us hold him as a model in temporal matters, if not in religious ones!
